Continuing in his new series on discernment in this week’s Global Broadcast, Ariel opens up the second temptation Yeshua faced in the wilderness from Matthew 4:5-7:

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

First Yeshua experienced a totally supernatural event: he was instantly “translated” from the Judean wilderness to the roof of the temple in Jerusalem.  Then, the “voice” quoted Psalm 91, word for word, challenging Him again to prove His Divine Sonship by trusting the supernatural experience and the Scripture.  Yeshua, as Messiah, knew that his destiny and ministry would involve the miraculous, the temple, and dramatic events in Jerusalem. Could this be it?  Is God speaking, or is the voice from another source?

He was tempted/tested in every way that we are. (Heb 4:15) The devil knows how to quote and manipulate the application of Scripture. Are we ready to face deviously sophisticated tests like Yeshua did? How can we be certain that God is really speaking?

Some lessons we can learn from this teaching:

  • Not everything supernatural is from God (II Thessalonians 2:10, II Corinthians 11:14).

  • The Jerusalem “syndrome”—the good and the bad

  • Context, context, context! as we interpret and apply Scripture

  • Gospel and Sonship over angels
