This past 12 months, Hezbollah has fired 9,000 (!) rockets and missiles into Israel from southern Lebanon. Finally, Israel crossed the border to clear the area of the armed terrorists. Since that time testimonies are now emerging as to how it happened that the widespread armament of southern Lebanon took place under UNIFIL's watch.
One Israeli commander on site said he was shocked to see rockets and armaments in every civilian home. Another commander made a slightly more modest assessment: it was in "almost" every home.
UNIFIL was supposed to be a peacekeeping force in light of UN resolutions 1559 which called for total disarmament of Hezbollah, and 1701 which called for Hezbollah to remain north of the Litany River. Both of those agreements were violated for the past 18 years.
The testimonies are fairly simple. Hezbollah kept the UNIFIL forces in the area under their control by violent threats. The UNIFIL forces acquiesced to the Jihadists. They did nothing to stop the buildup of enormous military infrastructure by Hezbollah. They just didn't do anything.
In addition, when they reported the daily violations to the UN superiors, their reports were ignored.
So that explains it. Why did UNIFIL do nothing? They were intimidated by Hezbollah and ignored by UN superiors. I suppose that is understandable – perhaps. (Why the Western elite has been so obsessed with berating Israel and defending Islamicist terror is a much wider topic, not in the scope of this short article.)
There is another question: What? This is clear evidence and confirmation of what has happened. It is exactly what we suspected and declared all these years. There has been a steady, purposeful military buildup by Hezbollah, with threats to the local population and to UN forces; all connected to a consistent coverup by the UN higher authorities.
Whatever the intentions were, the UN has been the enabler, protecter, and vehicle for the disastrous violation of the peace agreements between Israel and Lebanon.
Why? – 100% explained.
What? – 100% confirmed.
Is there a conclusion? Were the UNIFIL forces intimidated and paralyzed? Were they impotent sissies and scaredy-cats? Were the UN higher officials just "useful idiots"? Or were they in evil complicity with one of the worst war crimes of our century?
We in Israel don't have the luxury for either of those two excuses. The weapons are all aimed at us. The plans are for our total destruction. We have no choice but to fight back. We have nowhere to go. We have no choice but to win.
